A-Ticket vs B-Ticket: What You Need to Know

Mogao Caves operates a tiered ticket system designed to manage visitor flow and protect the fragile murals. Understanding the difference is essential for planning your visit.

A-Ticket (Standard)

Peak Season Warning

During July, August, and Chinese national holidays (particularly Golden Week in early October), A-tickets can sell out 2-4 weeks in advance. Book as early as possible.

How to Book as a Foreigner

The official booking platform is the Mogao Caves Visiting Reservation System. Here is how to navigate it as a non-Chinese visitor:

  1. Use the official WeChat mini-program. Search for "莫高窟参观预约" in the WeChat app. The mini-program has an English interface option.
  2. You need a Chinese phone number. The system requires SMS verification. Buy a local SIM card upon arrival or ask your hotel to help.
  3. Passport number is required. Enter your passport details exactly as they appear. This will be checked at the entrance.
  4. Select a time slot. A-ticket time slots fill quickly. Morning slots (8:00-10:00) are best for avoiding crowds and afternoon heat.
  5. Alternative: Use Trip.com or a local travel agency. They can book on your behalf for a small service fee and handle the language barrier.
  6. Payment. WeChat Pay (with a linked foreign card via Alipay International) or a Chinese bank card. Cash is not accepted for online bookings.

What to Expect Inside

The visit follows a structured flow:

Digital Exhibition Center

Two 20-minute films introduce the history of the Silk Road and the caves. The second film is in a 360-degree dome theater. A-ticket holders see both films.

Shuttle Bus to the Caves

A 15-minute bus ride from the Digital Center to the actual cave complex. Buses run continuously.

Guided Cave Tour

Groups of 20-25 visitors are assigned a guide. You visit 8 caves over approximately 75 minutes (A-ticket). The caves you see are rotated to minimize damage. Guides carry flashlights; the caves are dark to protect the pigments.

Free Time & Museum

After the guided tour, you can explore the site on your own. Visit the on-site museum, the research institute shop, and the iconic nine-story facade (Cave 96).

Photography is strictly forbidden inside the caves.

No exceptions. Flash photography and even non-flash photos damage the ancient pigments. Cameras must be stored during the tour. Phone use is also restricted. You can photograph the exterior of the caves, the nine-story facade, and the surrounding landscape.

Alternatives When Mogao Is Sold Out

If A-tickets and B-tickets are both gone, do not panic. Two excellent alternatives are within easy reach:

Yulin Caves

Located 170km east of Dunhuang. Contains 42 caves with murals comparable in quality to Mogao but far fewer visitors. You can often enter caves here that would be closed to the public at Mogao. Allow a full day for the trip.

Western Thousand Buddha Caves

Only 35km from Dunhuang. 16 surviving caves with murals spanning from the Northern Wei to the Yuan dynasties. Much smaller scale but often completely empty of tourists. Combine with a visit to Yumen Pass for a day trip.

Practical Tips

  • Bring a jacket. The caves maintain a constant cool temperature around 15°C (59°F) year-round. Even in summer, you will want a layer inside.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk and stand for 2-3 hours. The cave complex has stairs and uneven surfaces.
  • Bring your passport. The name on your ticket must match your passport. You will be asked to show it at the entrance checkpoint.
  • Morning visits are best. Light is optimal, crowds are thinner, and you avoid the afternoon desert heat. Book the earliest slot you can get.
  • No large bags. Backpacks and large bags must be stored in lockers at the entrance. Bring a small cross-body bag for essentials.
